1. Orientation (Opening)

In 2022, I started serving as an altar server at the Holy Cross Church in Kemuning. At that time, everything felt completely new to me. I often saw altar servers during Mass, but I never imagined that one day I would become one of them. When I finally joined, I didn’t know much about the responsibilities or the flow of the liturgy. I was only given simple tasks, such as carrying candles, standing beside the altar, or helping with small preparations. Even though the tasks were simple, I already felt proud because I could take part in serving the Mass. Being involved in the liturgy made me excited and motivated me to learn more.

Besides the tasks, I also had to learn how to behave properly in front of the congregation. I learned how to stand straight, stay focused, and avoid unnecessary movements. Those things seemed easy, but once I stood in front of the people, I realized how hard it was to stay calm. However, I was eager to improve. The senior altar servers who guided me were very patient, and that helped me feel more confident.

2. Events (Series of Events)

Year 2022:
My first year was filled with learning the basics. I learned how to carry the candles correctly, how to prepare the altar before Mass, and how to move according to the flow of the liturgy. The seniors taught me step by step how to walk quietly, the correct standing positions, when to bow, and how to understand cues from the priest. At first, I felt nervous because I was afraid of making mistakes, but slowly I became more used to it and understood my duties better. This service taught me discipline, and little by little, I began to build confidence and feel like a real part of the altar server team.

Year 2023:
The year 2023 became a new stage for me. I began receiving more challenging duties that required more focus. I was trusted to carry the missal for the priest, prepare liturgical items, and manage my movements during the Mass. These tasks required accuracy because even a small mistake could affect the service.

Year 2024 – present:
From 2024 until now, my responsibilities have grown even more. I serve not only in regular Sunday Masses but also in special celebrations such as feast days and other church events that require longer preparation and more detailed arrangements. Although the duties are more challenging, I enjoy them. I feel proud every time I am given an important role.

One of the biggest changes is that I started helping train new altar servers. I teach them the basics I once learned how to walk confidently, understand the order of the Mass, and stay calm in front of the congregation. Teaching them made me realize how far I’ve grown. It also reminded me of how patient my seniors were when they trained me, and now I can pass on that same patience to the new members.

In 2024, we also had a camping activity together. We stayed outdoors, cooked as a group, and took part in various team activities. It was a fun experience that brought us closer and gave us new motivation for serving.

During these years, I also started helping to train new altar servers. I teach them the basics I once learned—how to walk confidently, understand the order of the Mass, and stay calm in front of the congregation. Teaching them made me realize how much I have grown. It also reminded me of how patient the seniors were when they taught me.

Then in 2025, we had a very exciting recreation day: we went to Dufan and then visited the Cathedral. At Dufan, we played many rides and had so much fun, and the visit to the Cathedral gave us a peaceful and meaningful spiritual experience. It was the perfect mix of entertainment and reflection.

All these experiences from 2022 until now have truly shaped me. I have become more disciplined, more responsible, and more confident—both in serving and in my daily life.

3. Reorientation (Closing / Conclusion)

Overall, my journey as an altar server from 2022 until now has been a very valuable experience. I have learned many important life lessons such as discipline, teamwork, leadership, and responsibility. Every task, whether big or small, has helped shape me into a more mature individual.

Besides that, I gained many new friends and feel closer to the church community. Being active in church makes me feel more connected—not only to the people around me but also to my own faith. I am truly grateful for the trust and opportunities I have received throughout the years.

Becoming an altar server is a very special experience for me an experience that makes me proud and motivates me to keep serving better in the future.
